How to get rid of rats
There isn’t a homeowner in Wisconsin that goes through their day hoping for a rodent infestation. But when the weather here dips and we head into the cold season, rats and mice get all the more desperate to get inside our homes. You can try and deter rodents on your own by:
- Keeping clutter out of the home
- Taking trash out on a regular basis
- Cleaning your pipes and drains
- Setting traps or baits
Why Are There Rats in My Home?
Rats and mice want what any warm-blooded creature does: warmth, shelter, and a steady source of food. And your home offers all of that. That’s why the most important part of rodent prevention is removing easy access to these factors. If there is trash they can get into, take out the trash and seal the cans. If there is clutter they could hide in, clean up the clutter on a regular basis. If there’s no home for rodents, rodents will likely find their home somewhere else.

Homemade Rat Traps
Rats are not just damaging, they’re also a potential health hazard. They can spread hantavirus, salmonella, and other dangerous diseases through their urine and droppings, saliva, blood, ticks and fleas. Snap traps are often ineffective for larger rats, and poison-based traps may expose your family or pets to harmful chemicals. So what can you do?
If you want to try a homemade rat trap, we suggest the bucket method. Coat the sides of a bucket with peanut butter and set it near your problem area with a ramp leading to the rim. This will result in the rat climbing up, falling in, and being unable to escape due to the slippery sides. From that point on you can release the rats, or you can fill the bucket with water beforehand and let them drown.
